COMMANDMENTS FOR STUDY ABROAD

1. THOU SHALL BEGIN EARLY:  The entire cycle of choosing institutions, taking the standard tests, getting letters of reference,completing applications and getting visas takes 12-15 months. It is best to begin this cycle one summer in advance.

2. THOU SHALL MAKE A TIMELINE AND ADHERE TO IT: A detailed timeline will help you plan all aspects of your application, taking into consideration other activities and commitments.

3. THOU SHALL CHOOSE COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES CAREFULLY:  It is critical to choose colleges and universities carefully. Choose universities across geographical locations, public/private schools and selectivity so that you have maximum choice available.

4. THOU SHALL RESEARCH YOUR TARGET INSTITUTION METICULOUSLY: This is one of the aspect most commonly neglected by students. You should have a clear idea why you make a good fit for your targeted universities.

5. THOU SHALL NOT PLAGIARISE : The short point is you cannot borrow any part of someone else's work in your application.

6. THOU SHALL TREAT ALL COMPONENTS OF APPLICATION AS EQUALLY IMPORTANT: Do not assume that academic achievements and scores of standerdised tests are only important.

7. THOU SHALL ABIDE BY THE HONOR CODE OF HIGHER EDUCATION: Students must be honest in their applications.

8. THOU SHALL NOT TAKE THE ADVICE OF QUACKS IN THE TRADE: A large number of quacks and charlatans thrive in every part of the country, offering short cuts to admissions and visas. One should make proper enquiries before trusting them.

9. THOU SHALL NOT RELY ON RANKINGS ALONE IN MAKING THY DECISION:  Don't go by rankings alone. Dig deep and  understand your requirements before making final decision.

10. THOU SHALL NOT ASSUME THAT ADMISSION GUARANTEES A VISA:  Often, admission is the easy part and visa the more difficult one. Familiarize yourself with visa process.
